If there was a university here: there would be professors and students from all over the world, there would be many languages and cultures, research centers and entrepreneurial bases, art galleries and libraries, concert halls and stadiums, where teachers, students and residents will be able to share ideas and thoughts, with convenient transportation. There would be universities within the communities and communities within the university. How wonderful this life would be!

COLLEGE TOWN

The Ideal Solution

Europe and the United States is no stranger to the concept of “college town”. This is also the method adopted by many famous European and American schools. Many small towns which the famous universities are located were established because of the schools and flourished as the university rose in prestige. One of the roles of "college town" is to gather talents from all walks of life, exchanging ideas and igniting creativity.

The characteristic towns formed with the university as a core can often become the engine of the “new economy” based on innovation and creativity, forming an excellent atmosphere for the creation of new knowledge and new technologies on campus, which in turn promote the development of high-tech industries.

Planning

Complying with Local Characteristics

There are 4 natural villages in the plot where the college town is planned. The Huitong ancient village is located at the foot of the west side of the Chihua Mountain. It is adjacent to the Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College. Along the main road of the ancient village to the south, Zhengkeng Village and Baiyelin Village are dotted with natural scenery, while the northwest corner of the plot is Nazhou Village, which has the Guyuan former residence, which is a historical protection building.

In this regard, the plan is to preserve and utilize the hills and water bodies of the plot as much as possible, and use this to outline the planning structure. On this basis, to plan the layout of a series of compact communities. At the same time, the plan will incorporate the overall design with the Huitong village and Nazhou Village, making the two villages part of the new community and retaining the local cultural characteristics as much as possible.

Highlight

Three Tightly Compact Neighborhoods

Richard George Rogers believes that cities should be well designed to become a more compact, accessible urban environment that supports a wide variety of uses, allowing people to enjoy work and life in a city with convenient public transport, sustainable development and with lively atmosphere.

Based on this philosophy, the RSHP design team has planned three tightly compact neighborhoods for the college town study: the Education District, the Cultural District and the R&D District. Give each district the functionality it deserves. Each district has its own unique city texture, mixed and open spaces to maximize the convenience in peoples’ life.

The college town transportation system will give priority to pedestrians and encourage green transportation and plan to build a series of parking lots to facilitate the principle of “park then walk”. A comprehensive green transportation system is also planned, including a 5km long bicycle lane, a 16km electric bus route, and a 10km green and blue corridor. In addition to the Central Ecological Park, the project also plans for 21 hectares of public open space.
